So I have to be honest about this song. My only motivation at the beginning of writing this song was to have a song that mirrored (and maybe even combatted) Amazing Grace...lol. There...you have it...guilty as charged.
But as I begin to study my Word on the topic of Mercy and how it differs from Grace, this song became more than just a creative challenge. So first and foremost, I feel like I must take on the time out to talk about the difference between Grace and Mercy. Grace is the act of receiving something (usually to your benefit) that you do not deserve. We hear the term most often with a Grace Period. Your bill is due on the 1st, but you have a six (6) day grace period to pay it. That's something given to you which provides you some leeway before getting hit with a penalty. God's Grace is given to us even though we don't deserve it. That said, we always have access to his love. That's how great God is!!
But I stand even more in awe of God when I think about his Mercy. Mercy is the willful forgiveness and forgetfulness of a act you've done (which is usually not good). In other words, you are guilty of an offense, yet mercy says you don't have to serve the punishment. In the Christian faith, we believe that although we are guilty of the offense (sin), we don't have to serve the punishment (death). Why? Because the price has been paid by Christ (Romans 3:23-26)!! What Amazing Mercy God showed that day on the cross.
I now have an even deeper understand of the phrase "His Mercy Endureth Forever" that is often found in Psalms. Everyday, God graciously shows us Mercy, overlooking our faults and allowing us to be a part of his Grace. I thank you God for your Amazing Mercy. That is the reason for this song.
Much Love,
MD
